TORONTO, Ont. – To live to not to live in Toronto?
Toronto’s Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday doesn’t think the city’s downtown core is a good place to raise children.
His remarks were connected to a debate in council over whether the builders of a downtown King Street condo should be forced to have three-bedroom units in 10 per cent of the building to accommodate young families.
Holyday doesn’t think they should be forced to be family-friendly, adding this controversial comment of downtown city core: “I certainly think it’s really not the ideal place where people might want to raise their families.”
But that put downtown and midtown councillors like Adam Vaughan and Josh Matlow on their heels.
With a smirk on his face, Vaughan told 680News he’s esentially laughing off what holyday had to say.
“I think what he said is pretty silly and I think most people will judge him accordingly,” Vaughan said.
He said Holyday’s notion that downtown is no place to raise a family is as far from the truth as it gets.
“It’s a great place to raise my kids,” Vaughan said. “The great thing about Toronto is that every part of the city is a good place to raise kids and, in fact, every part of the city should be a great place to raise kids and we should just make it better.”
Vaughn said Holdyay’s comments weren’t a particularly nice thing for downtown parents to hear.
“How do we build a great city for kids? And how do we make sure every neighbourhood has the capacity to house kids?”
Vaughan pointed out that he was born and raised in the Trinity-Spadina ward that he represents, accusing the deputy mayor of being out of touch with urban life.
