TORONTO, Ont. – As the record high temperatures continue in the GTA, one city councillor is concerned for the safety of pets and children.

Councillor Gloria Lindsay Luby says she wants store to put up signs reminding people not to leave them in cars when they go shopping.

Lindsay Luby told 680News signs will go a long way in preventing any more incidents

“It helps remind people and it’s not a sign they see constantly like street signs that people tend to forget about. This is something that hopefully will prick their memory.”

She said this is something that should have been done a long time ago

“Particularly in large malls like Sherway Gardens or Yorkdale. That should be a no brainer for them.”

Because these stores are on private property, the city cannot force corporations to post the signs but Lindsay Luby thinks they will do it willingly.

“I think they’ll see the public benefit. I really do. Since thousands of people shop at these places, surly it would not be a big cost factor for them,” she said. “To add another sign that really is a health and safety benefit shouldn’t be a problem.”

Lindsay Luby added that not leaving pets inside cars should be a no-brainer but it continues to happen and it has to stop.

“People just do that unthinkingly. They think – oh I’m going to leave the window down a crack and that should be fine. No it’s not. The internal temperature develops very very quickly.”

City council endorsed the motion 31-2. Mayor Rob Ford and Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong voting against the move.
