Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler has stepped down as a judge on American Idol.

The rocker announced the news Thursday, just hours after fellow Idol judge Jennifer Lopez revealed she too was thinking about moving on.  Lopez made the comment  during an interview with breakfast television show in the United States.

In a statement, Tyler said he is leaving the show to focus on his band, which he calls his first love.

“Idol was over the top fun, and I loved every minute of it…Now it’s time to bring Rock Back,” he explained.

Tyler and Lopez joined Idol as a judges two seasons ago following the departure of show creator Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul.
