The Canadian loonie is celebrating its 25th birthday Saturday, after being released into circulation on June 30th, 1987.

Now a quarter-of-a-century old, the iconic loonie is being commemorated by the Royal Canadian Mint through a special one-dollar silver coin.

The coin will feature two loons swimming past each other, and will go on sale July 16.

A total of 15,000 of the commemorative coins will be issued.

The one-dollar bill, the predecessor to the loonie, was last produced in 1989.

Coin collectors say a one-dollar bill in mint condition is worth a maximum of three dollars to a collector.

Otherwise, the bill is simply worth one dollar, and can actually be used as legal tender.
