MARKHAM – Markham residents expressed their concerns over plans for a $325-million arena at a public meeting, Wednesday.
The Toronto Star reported that more than 100 people attended the meeting to discuss the future sports and entertainment complex.
Many of those residents expressed concern over who will pay for the project.
Funding for the arena has been created through a public-private deal where half of the costs will be paid for by future development in Markham, while the municipality will borrow the rest to pay for construction.
Council approved the financial plan in April.
The arena would seat 20,000 and would contain an NHL-sized ice-rink.
Graeme Roustan with GTA Centre and Partners, a major private sector group is leading the proposal, told 680News he wants to bid for the 2015 World Junior Hockey Championship.
