TORONTO, Ont. – You might want to hold off on filling up the gas tank until after midnight Wednesday, after some GTA stations increased their prices by two cents.
With the price of gas expected to dip 3.4 cents/litre by Thursday, the recent volatility may only be a preview of things to come.
680News gas-price guru, Roger McKnight from EnPro, warns we’re in for a summer gas war, with prices rising up-and-down all season long.
McKnight added that the anticipated price drop Thursday follows a case of “bullying from the big guy.”
“You have one market leader in Southern Ontario who attempted to raise the price yesterday at the wholesale level, and nobody really followed,” McKnight said. “To rap their knuckles, they’re dropping down 3.4 cents today and they (likely) will follow them down.”
“This could be the start of a little war,” McKnight added.
Comparing the price-war to a kindergarten class, McKnight said the market and prices are running high on emotion right now.
McKnight predicts that gas prices will hover between $1.20/litre and $1.24/litre all summer long.
However, should a powerful hurricane tear through the Gulf of Mexico, McKnight warns the price could skyrocket and all bets are off.
“It’s hurricane season and that can change everything,” McKnight said.
The price for gas peaked at $1.40/litre in April.
