Former Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Others in the 2012 class include Joe Sakic, Adam Oates and Pavel Bure.
They will be formally inducted in November.
Sundin began his career with the Nordiques but he was best known as a high-scoring centre for the Leafs.
During his time with the Maple Leafs, Sundin became the team’s all time leading scorer, was a nine time All-Star and became the team’s first European captain.
His No. 13 jersey was raised to the rafters at the Air Canada Centre in February, where it joined such previous Leafs’ greats as Darryl Sittler and Wendel Clark.
Fellow Hall of Fame inductee Joe Sakic had only positive things to say about Sundin’s performance in Toronto.
“When we watched him in Toronto he really became a great for the Maple Leafs and just a tremendous hockey player. Every time we played Toronto you circle one guy cause Mats was such a force and had a tremendous career there. I loved watching Mats play.” Sakic told Sportsnet590 The FAN during a conference call, Tuesday.
Sakic scored more than 600 goals in his stellar career with the Quebec Nordiques and Colorado Avalanche.
Sundin praised Sakic on his performance on and off the ice.
“For me when I look back at all the great players that I played against and with, and not only as a player but as a person, Joe Sakic is right up there, number one.” said Sundin.
The lightning-quick Bure had five seasons of 50 goals or more after he left the former Soviet Union to join the Vancouver Canucks.
Former Toronto Maple Leafs and Team Canada coach Pat Quinn said he was proud to have worked with such great hockey players.
“It’s just incredible really. Having been around Pavel and Mats and then also Joe on the Canadian team, it’s just been such a privilege for me as a coach and hockey person,” Quinn told Sportsnet590 The FAN.
“Mats, as far as I’m concerned, was truly one of the great captains and belongs in the great history of Toronto captains.”
Oates, who was named head coach of the Washington Capitals earlier in the day, was known for his slick passing skills in a long career with seven teams.
