Donations are still pouring in for a school bus monitor in New York State after a video of her being bullied by a group of school children was posted on YouTube.
More than $500,000 has been raised.
Laren Klein was bullied by four seventh graders earlier this week and a video of the incident posted online quickly went viral.
It prompted a Toronto man to start a fundraising campaign.
Max Sidorov says he was sad when he saw the video and decided that Klein needed a vacation.
“I started a fund raiser and within a few hours we broke our goal of $5,000. I didn’t expected we were going to get to $5,000 and in a day we had more then $200,000,” he told 680News.
Sidorov said he experienced similar bullying issues when he first came to Canada as a child.
There’s still close to 4 weeks left in the campaign.
In the 10-minute cellphone video, which was recorded by one of the students, the 68-year-old grandmother of eight tries her best to ignore the profanity, insults and outright threats directed at her.
She eventually breaks down in tears.
Police said Klein does not want the boys to face criminal charges, partly because of the storm of criticism leveled at them.
Klein told NBC’s “Today” show Thursday that it took “a lot of willpower” not to respond to the jeers from the four boys riding the bus operated by the Greece Central School District. Klein said she was “amazed” at the support she received.
“I’ve got these nice letters, emails, Facebook messages,” she said. “It’s like, wow, there’s a whole world out there that I didn’t know. It’s really awesome.”
Police say the middle-schoolers accused of taunting her have received threats, with one boy receiving more than a thousand death threats.
