TORONTO, Ont. – The City of Toronto is considering extending the grace period for drivers before writing up parking tickets, in an effort to help the city save on court costs.
City staff are recommending that the current five-minute grace period be increased to 10 minutes.
The 10-minute grace period would let drivers have tickets cancelled if they’re nabbed within 10 minutes of their paid expiration time.
One driver named Claudia said she’s been ticketed a few times, for being just a few minutes late.
“It’s frustrating, especially when you actually do pay for parking. And when they’re actually sitting there just waiting for those last five minutes, and they really don’t care,” she said.
The downside for drivers though is that street parking rates are going up — an additional 25-50 cents a hour at most meters across the city.
