Police in Miami, Fla., have ruled out 29-year-old Canadian Luka Magnotta as a suspect in an unsolved murder dating back three years.

CBS News reported police had looked into rumours that Magnotta may have been in south Florida at the time of the man’s death, but now said that’s not the case.

Police in Miami had said there are similarities between the killing of Concordia University student Jun Lin, 33, and the dismemberment of a man — a Guatemalan national –  in Miami in 2009.

Magnotta is the prime suspect in the gruesome death of Lin.

Miami police are not the first foreign department to look into whether Magnotta, who made headlines around the world, may have been involved in a murder or dismemberment in their jurisdiction.

Police in Los Angeles, Calif., also looked for links to a murder of a similar nature in their city.

Police in Gatineau are also looking into whether there may be a connection to Magnotta in the 2011 slaying of an 18-year-old college student.

The list does not end there, as Arizona police have also taken an interest in the Montreal dismemberment case after a dismembered body was discovered there.

Canadian authorities are trying to have Magnotta returned to Montreal where he will face charges in Lin’s death.
