The Toronto Blue Jays have granted the request of outfielder Vladimir Guerrero to be released from his minor league contract.

Guerrero, 37, is now a free agent after hitting .303 in eight games with the Las Vegas 51s of the Pacific Coast League (AAA) with two doubles, a triple and four RBI.

The Blue Jays signed Guerrero to a minor-league deal on May 10. He reported to extended spring training in Dunedin, Fla., and then appeared in four games for single-A Dunedin where he batted .450 with a double, four home runs and eight RBIs.

There was no immediate word on why Guerrero asked for his release.

Guerrero is a nine-time all-star and won the 2004 American League MVP award with the Anaheim Angels. He has a career batting average of .318 with 449 home runs and 1,496 RBIs.

In 2011, he appeared in 145 games for Baltimore and batted .290 with a .416 slugging percentage.
