The first step towards the TTC subway expansion to Vaughan is now complete.
The digging has been completed on a 1.6-kilometre twin tunnel. The tunnel goes from the site of the new Sheppard Avenue West station to where the Finch Avenue West station will be.
The extension will eventually bring the TTC from Downsview station into Vaughan.
Mayor Rob Ford spoke at a ceremony Monday morning celebrating the completed first stage.
The occasion gave Ford the opportunity to reignite the subway debate.
“It’s what people want, it’s what people are going to get,” Ford said.
As for where the money will come from? New TTC head Andy Byford said it’s time to get creative.
“I think we have to be creative about how we find new sources of revenue,” TTC head Andy Byford said. “There are various ways that you can finance systems and I know city councillors are talking about that right now.”
Some ideas they’re considering are a sales tax or road tolls.
