OTTAWA, Ont. – Federal opposition parties have submitted approximately 1,300 amendments to the Harper government’s omnibus budget, Friday.
The next step will be for the speaker of the House to look them over, throw away duplicates and group together similar changes.
On Monday, the speaker will announce how many votes there will be but MP’s are bracing for as many as 600 – all of them likely to be shot down because of the Conservative majority. The vote itself could take days.
“The objective of the opposition is to oppose it, whether they oppose it one time or hundreds of times,” said government House leader Peter Van Loan, labelling it a ‘pointless delay’.
“They’re going to voting against the measures of the budget that create jobs and economic growth. We’re going to work to ensure that the government passes those measures.”
However, NDP MP’s said they are willing to push this as long as possible, saying it’s about principle.
“If we just let this go by without doing everything we can to stop them from ramming through a bill this large without accountability, then we’ve failed our constituents and we’ve failed Canadians,” said Ottawa-Centre MP Paul Dewar.
The party said it has to show the Tories that Canadians are not happy with the Harper government attempting to make major changes in regards to the environment and employment insurance without proper debate.
