NEW YORK – Mario Gutierrez thought he was heading back to California after being stunned with the news of the retirement of I’ll Have Another.
Instead, the suddenly illustrious jockey was told to stick around Friday to run five races at Belmont Park. And on Saturday, instead of vying for the coveted Triple Crown aboard I’ll Have Another, Gutierrez will climb aboard the chestnut colt for one final time to lead the post parade before the Belmont Stakes.
Gutierrez will then watch the race instead of riding in it.
I’ll Have Another and Gutierrez will forever be linked together, teaming as relative unknowns to charge within a tender tendon of making racing history.
Gutierrez said about I’ll Have Another: “Those kind of horses are once in a lifetime.”
