TORONTO, Ont. – The Canadian Plastics Industry Association (CPIA) was quick to condemn Wednesday’s plastic bag ban in Toronto.
“There will be no winners here,” said Marion Axmith, Director General of the CPIA.
“The residents of this city, the industry, no winners whatsoever. Jobs will be lost, and investment in the city will be lost,” Axmith added.
Meanwhile, spokesman Joe Hruska said plastic bags are really not the environmental danger they are being made out to be.
“It’s less than 0.8 per cent of landfill, and in Toronto, 82 per cent of the bags are reused or recycled, that’s a huge record,” Hruska said.
Axmith said more than 5,000 people in the GTA work in plastic-bag manufacturing, a figure that will surely be affected by this new policy.
“Families who work in the plastic industry, 5,000 jobs here, 15,000 spin-off that supply those industries. If you lose your business, what do you lose?” Hruska asked.
“You lose your investment, you lose your jobs.”
