OSHAWA, Ont. – The SIU has been called in to investigate after a suspect in his 20′s was shot by a Durham Regional Police officer.
It began as a call to police for a stolen vehicle – a red Ford Mustang – on Montrave Avenue, near Park Road South between King Street and Gibb Street.
Neighbours in the Park Road and 401 area said it was an unbelievable scene when the sports car with screeching tires smashed into cars, drove across lawns and sidewalks.
Brent was watching the entire event unfold and decided to lend a hand to police.
“There was only one cruiser pursuing the guy at the time, so I’m like ‘she looks like she needs help’,” he told 680News. “So we tried to box the guy in to a neighbour’s lawn. I went into the front, she came in from the back and the guy rammed me twice, and basically took out my front end of my Sunfire.”
The suspect drove a short distance away and tried to ram the police cruiser before being boxed in once again.
At that point, another neighbour, Glen, also stepped in to help, using his truck to block the road.
“He was on everybody’s lawn,” he told 680News, saying he estimates the suspect hit about ten cars before it was all over. “He was all over Park Road running into cars.”
“The police had him blocked in. I thought he was getting out his Mustang to run, so I got out of my car. If he ran my way, I was going to jump on him. The cops told him to get on the ground, he wouldn’t listen.”
That’s when an officer got out of the vehicle and fired four shots, but the suspect continued to ram the police car, and drove a short distance before being stopped by another officer.
He then got out of the car and was bleeding from the side and from the leg. He was quickly arrested, and is being treated in the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
No officers or residents of the area were hurt.
