TORONTO, Ont. – A young man, believed to be in his late 20s, has died after a broad-daylight shooting in the city’s west end.

Police were called to a townhouse complex at 4020 Dundas Street West, in the Dundas Street and Scarlett Road area, just before 3 p.m. Thursday after reports of multiple gunshots fired.

Parents in the area were alarmed, as a school bus full of children was scheduled to arrive at the scene just moments after the shooting took place.

“Anybody that saw anything or has any information, we do know at this time of day it is quite busy getting into rush hour, kids getting out of school,” said Const. Wendy Drummond with the Toronto Police.

“If anyone has any information please call 11 Division, and again if you want to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers.”

The canine unit was deployed in the area to search for multiple suspects, for which descriptions have not yet been released.

“It’s hard to say as to whether people who were seen running were actually people involved in this or people running because they heard gunshots,” said Detective Wayne Banks.

The suspects are believed to be armed and potentially dangerous, as a gun has not yet been located by police.

There have been three shootings in the same area since the middle of April, and this marks the seventh homicide in the past three years, according to police.

Jaivoan Cromwell, 19, was fatally shot on nearby Woolner Avenue on April 12, while three days later a 16-year-old was hurt in a drive-by shooting on nearby Bernice Crescent.

Kemi Omololu-Olunloyo, a community activist, said she’s fed up with the violence in the neighbourhood.

“Until death comes to your doorsteps you don’t know how it feels, what do we have to do about 4020 Dundas, it’s enough, it’s enough,” Omololu-Olunloyo said. “Start talking, start snitching, whatever it is, tell the police what you know.”

“The community wants this violence to stop, obviously there was some fear and apprehension, we are trying to ensure to people there is no danger,” Banks said.

There are security cameras at the townhouse complex and police are hoping some of the video can help their investigation.
