Cuts could be coming to the city’s schools as the Toronto District School Board seeks to balance its 2012-13 budget.
The TDSB is considering “non-staffing” related cuts, TDSB chair Chris Bolton said at a news conference Monday afternoon.
While he wouldn’t comment specifically on what services could be eliminated, published reports suggest the board is considering closing cafeterias raising community fees. Community groups pay to use school facilities after hours.
The board is facing a $58-million deficit. Bolton said the cuts won’t happen until trustees have spoken to parents.
“We want to hear from the community and minimize the impact on our learners,” Bolton said. Trustees will consider the proposal with their constituents before the budget vote on June 13.
The board was facing an $109-million deficit but after cuts at a special meeting last month, the deficit dropped. In April, the board voted to lay off hundreds of employees in order to help eliminate the projected budget shortfall.
Members voted to cut 200 full-time secondary school teachers, along with 134 school office positions, one high school vice-principal and 17 elementary vice-principals. In addition, two aquatics instructors, six school based safety monitors, 10 caretaking staff and four special education support staff will be cut.
