TORONTO, Ont. – The countdown to the 2015 Pan Am games is on and the organizers said Friday they are on track, as Toronto gears up for this huge event.
But the games won’t be as far reaching as previously thought.
The geographic scope of the event is being scaled back to help keep within the $1.4-billion budget.
Instead of 16 municipalities, the revised plan includes 11 including Toronto, Mississauga and Markham.
There are now seven core destinations – or clusters – that will host at least two sports.
“As we try to econmicze, one of the things we’re doing is trying to move and centralize sports,” Games CEO Ian Troop said.
Those clusers include ones in Etobicoke and at York University.
Mayor Rob Ford said this is a win-win for Toronto.
“We’re going to put the city on the map once and for all,” “And I think – well, I don’t think, I know – it’s going to be a huge benefit for all the taxpayers in the city.”
Organizers are calling this the people’s games and said they will be accessible and affordable for families.
