With two cases this week of falling concrete from the Gardiner Expressway, NDP MP Olivia Chow is calling for immediate action to fix the major artery.
The avid urban cyclist told reporters Friday she’s calling on all three levels of government to come together to fix the highway immediately.
“Torontonians shouldn’t have to wear a helmet to come under the Gardiner Expressway,” she said, holding her purple bike helmet and using the crumbling Gardiner Expressway as a backdrop.
“It’s a miracle no one’s been hurt” Chow said.
Concrete has fallen from the Gardiner five times in total.
“How many times does it take for people to be narrowly missed by these concrete chunks?,” Chow asked. “There needs to be zero tolerance of raining concrete from the Gardiner.”
She said Toronto taxpayers pay their fair share.
“For every $10 that they pay, $9 goes to the federal and provincial government,” Chow explained. “Only $1 goes to the city.”
She said road tolls may have to be considered but she said that alone won’t fix things.
“You can toll all you want, there will never be enough money to fix the Gardiner,” she said. “The Champlain Bridge in Montreal, for example, they’re now talking about tolls but it needs tax dollars to work.”
Chow said this isn’t just a City of Toronto problem. Roads are in rough shape across the country.
She wants the federal, provincial and city governments to work jointly to come up with a short-term and long-term repair plan and the money to fix it fast.
