TORONTO, Ont. – With the condo boom in full swing, a Toronto MPP says it’s time to update Ontario’s condo laws in order to better protect owners.
NDP MPP Rosario Marchese is no stranger to condos, with cranes popping up all over his Trinity-Spadina riding.
With more and more Toronto residents purchasing and living in condos, Marchese says the current act doesn’t have any consumer protection.
To help facilitate this, Marchese is pushing for the creation of a review board.
“When they have a problem, particularly with a developer, they have nowhere to turn to except the court system, the courts are incredibly expensive, no condo owner can afford to take on a developer,” Marchese said.
With the concentration of condos as high as it is now, Marchese suggests most developers aren’t as good as they used to be.
“We never heard complaints prior to 1998, and that’s because I believe condominium construction was relatively good, but since then, we have seen an incredible number of problems, Marchese added.
This would mark Marchese’s fourth attempt to get his private-member bill through, and he’s hoping the current minority government environment will improve his chances.
About in a million people in Ontario currently live in condos.
