TORONTO, Ont. – Those walking or driving under the Gardiner Expressway this week might be tempted to grab a helmet, after Thursday marked the second instance of falling concrete this week.
By Thursday evening City crews had finished chipping away the rest of the loose concrete from the Gardiner bridge over Parkside Drive, leaving a three-metre long section exposed.
While nobody was injured and no vehicles were damaged in Thursday’s incident, many drivers are concerned for their safety when travelling under the expressway.
“It’s only a matter of time before somebody gets hurt, I’m not sure what can be done about it other than a massive overhaul, this patchwork system doesn’t seem to be working – at least not in the long term,” said one man named Jeremy.
Traffic at Parkside Drive was being limited to a single lane in each direction, with construction pylons blocking the area where the chunk of concrete fell.
Earlier this week another piece of concrete fell from the Gardiner Expressway near Lake Shore Boulevard and Jarvis Street.
As with Thursday’s incident at Parkside Drive, nobody and no vehicles were damaged in that fall.
Drivers in the area said they were frustrated with the lack of progress.
“Not just as a driver, as a taxpayer, all the money I’m giving them. I’m a small-business owner, they’re taking money left, right and centre, and then you can’t even drive on the roads,” Jeremy added.
