OTTAWA – The New Democrats are trying to make the government pay for not wanting to compromise over the budget.
On Wednesday the Conservatives rejected a proposal from the NDP to have the 400-page budget split up into separate parts so it can be fully studied.
The NDP wants to tie up parliament and delay the budget implementation vote which is scheduled for Monday.
House Leader Nathan Cullen says the Conservatives brought this upon themselves
“We told the government from the start, we would attempt to work with them to separate the bill and allow Canadians in. We weren’t going to delay it by anything on the calendar or the result would be this. The government made their bed now they have to lay in it,” said Cullen.
He would not say how long his MP’s can continue these tactics or how long they can delay the vote.
The budget bill contains changes to about 60 different laws and the opposition wants them closely studied.
The government is arguing that the bill needs to be passed quickly or else our economy will suffer.
