One in four Canadian women will suffer some form of physical abuse during their lifetime, and experts say a woman is abused 24 times before she will leave the domestic violence.

With these staggering stats in mind, Rogers Media, which owns Citytv, is partnering with the Canadian Women’s Foundation for Morning for Change — a six city, live television fundraiser to help put a stop to domestic violence.

“Recent stats show that on any given day, more than 3,000 women and 2,500 children are living in an emergency shelter to escape domestic violence,” said Beverley Wybrow, CEO, Canadian Women’s Foundation.

“Money raised from Morning for Change will also help to teach young people about healthy relationships and counsel children who have witnessed violence.””

The money raised will go to programs to help stop the cycle of violence and assist women in getting back on their feet and becoming self sufficient — for women like Anastasia, who once were forced to rely on shelters after being abused.

“I was lying on the bed and he hit me with a fist, my back, and when I stand up and started to react, he pulled my hair down. I was in shock,” said Anastasia, who said that in addition to the physical abuse, she endured months of verbal abuse from her husband. After finally leaving, she turned to Interval House shelter for refuge.

Morning for Change will air on “Breakfast Television” from 6-9 a.m.,Wednesday, featuring co-hosts Kevin Frankish and Dina Pugliese, and will air 6-10 a.m. on CHFI with radio personalities Mike Cooper and Erin Davis.
