A Toronto police officer is the Mikey Network’s 14th save, with a Mikey defibrillator.
Officials say the 52-year-old officer collapsed and went into cardiac arrest while exercising as part of his regular training program, May 2.
“There were trained people around him that grabbed the MIKEY defibrillator off the wall and applied it to him. After two shocks he was resuscitated,” explained Morty Henkle of the Mikey Network.
The officer is expected to make a full recovery.
Since its start in 2003, the Mikey Network has placed more than 12-hundred defibrillators in places like schools and sports facilities.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation says that up to 45-thousand cardiac arrests occur each year in Canada.
Less than five-per cent of those who have a cardiac arrest outside of a hospital survive and for every one minute delay in defibrillation, the survival rate decreases by as much as ten per cent.
