TORONTO, Ont. – The 13th annual Ontario Police Memorial Ceremony of Remembrance was created in 2000 to pay tribute to all the police officers in Ontario who have been killed while on the job.
Taking place on the first Sunday of May every year, the names of all fallen officers are inscribed on the Wall of Honour in Queen’s Park during the ceremony.
Beginning at 10 a.m. with the reading of 251 names, police pipe bands will lead officers and their families and friends in a march around Queen’s Park, arriving at the police memorial around 11 a.m.
The names of three officers have been added this year, including York Regional Police Constable Garrett Styles, who died last year when he was dragged and pinned under a van during a traffic stop in East Gwillumbury.
Both the premier and lieutenant governor were expected to attend the ceremony.
