TORONTO, Ont. – Toronto police are asking for witnesses to come forward after a man was shot and killed Friday night in the Lawrence Heights area.

Detectives allege Paul Fitzgerald Benn, 38, was shot multiple times in a parkette in the Allen Road and Lawrence Avenue around 7 p.m. Friday.

“It involved multiple gunshots being fired, so forensics officers are searching the area for cartridge cases and projectiles that will afford us some evidence, at least linking the firearm that was involved in this case,” said Detective-Sergeant Frank Skubic.

There were numerous people in the area shortly before the shooting, and police say they would like to speak to anybody who saw or heard anything.

“Last evening was quite warm, there were a number of people out and about in this community,” Skubic said. “We’ve had several officers conduct a door-to-door canvas and we’ve received some information and a good level of cooperation, however, I’m certain there are other witnesses out there who we are yet to meet with.”

Benn was rushed to Sunnybrook Hospital where he was pronounced dead after succumbing to injuries.

Investigators say the man, who is Toronto’s 15th murder victim of the year, was known to police, although they wouldn’t elaborate on this point.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
