TORONTO, Ont. – If he was nervous, young right-hander Henderson Alvarez showed little distraction on the mound Friday, as he all but cruised through the Los Angeles Angels’ lineup, throwing a steady diet of sinking fastballs.

The 22-year-old pitched his first complete-game shutout in the major leagues, going nine strong innings to power the Blue Jays to their fourth straight win with a 4-0 victory over the Angels.

Throwing only 97 pitches while allowing a meagre six hits, Alvarez (2-2) managed to stay true to form by inducing groundball after groundball from the Angels’ batters.

“Right from the first pitch of the game through the 97th one, he stayed in his delivery well and didn’t overthrow the baseball,” Toronto manager John Farrell said.

The outing was perhaps the most impressive in the young career of Alvarez, born in Venezuela, who figures to be a long-term staple in the Jays’ starting rotation.

A little run support didn’t hurt either, as a two-out RBI single in the third by shortstop Yunel Escobar would provide Alvarez with all the scoring he would need.

For good measure, Jays’ slugger Jose Bautista added a two-run homer while Canadian sensation Brett Lawrie chipped in with a sacrifice fly.

The win marks the second straight shutout for the Jays, after righty Brandon Morrow blanked the Angels 5-0 on Thursday.

The Angels, predicted to be one baseball’s elite teams this year, have struggled to put runs on the board against the streaking Jays.

Leading the struggling Angels has been major offseason acquisition Albert Pujols, who went 0-4 Friday, dropping his batting average below the Mendoza Line to a lowly .194.

The three-time NL MVP signed a 10-year, $240 million contract in the offseason, but has so far struggled to live up to the lofty expectations.

In fact, Pujols, often considered one of the game’s greatest hitters, is mired in a career-worst 33-game home run drought.

The Jays and Angels will continue their tilt Saturday night from Angel Stadium, with young right-hander Kyle Drabek hoping to build on the recent success of Alvarez and Morrow.
