WASHINGTON – The American economy created only 115,000 jobs during April, but the U.S. Labor Department said that that was enough to push the unemployment rate to a three-year low.
Economists had been expecting the U.S. would add 160,000 jobs in April, although the shortfall was offset by 53,000 additional jobs in revisions for the previous two months.
As a result, the U.S. unemployment rate edged down 0.1 of a point to 8.1 per cent.
BMO economist Sal Guatieri said the upward revisions removed some of the sting from the weak April report.
He said business services, retail and manufacturing sectors in the United States added moderate number of jobs while construction was down for the third month.
