Toronto city councillors Giorgio Mammoliti and Michelle Berardinetti have planned to make a trip to the PAWS sanctuary in California to get some answers surrounding the hold-up on the transfer of three Toronto Zoo elephants.
The councillors will pick up the tab for the trip and Councillor Mammoliti said there is only one reason they’re going to make this trip.
“The reality is we’re all together on this, and we realize that it is the health and safety of those animals that is the most important factor here,” Mammoliti said.
Zoo boss John Tracogna and the zoo’s veterinarian will join the councillors to see the sanctuary for themselves.
Tracogna said there are still many questions that need answering.
“It’s all dependent still, for example, on when a U.S. import permit is recieved,” Tracogna said. “We have no idea at this point when that will be forthcoming.”
In March, former game-show host Bob Barker had offered to foot the $900,000 bill to move the animals.
