Research In Motion is trying to win back users after losing market share to companies like Samsung and Apple.

RIM CEO Thorsten Heins unveiled the company’s new operating system at the BlackBerry World Conference in Orlando, Tuesday morning.

Heins says the BlackBerry 10 operating system will include a modified keypad which will allow users to select full words with a single key stroke.

It will also contain a camera that can create an “ideal” picture by combining several frames together.

An analyst says it is a small step in the right direction.

Dr Nick Bontis, professor of strategy at the Degroot School of Business, McMaster University says its a great new start for the struggling company.

“What this allows the developers to do is to work with the operating system so they can develop enough applications so that when the hardware device gets launched – which is expected in September or October – there will be a nice inventory of applications available for all the users,” explained Bontis.

Heins was brought in at the start of the year as part of an urgent effort to turn RIM around.

The announcement comes as rumours, including talks of a possible takeover, continue about the future of the Waterloo based technology firm.
