It’s the second fatal yacht accident off the coast of California in less than a month, after a 37-foot yacht crashed with another boat near the border of the Mexico.
The yacht had been taking part in a boat race from Newport, California to Ensenada, Mexico, when reports indicate it collided with a much larger boat.
Four sailors are dead and it is possible that more crew members are missing, as the boat hadn’t submitted a crew list.
It also wasn’t equipped with radar, despite the fact that it was racing in what is commonly a busy shipping route.
Rich Roberts of the Newport Ocean Sailing Association says safety regulations may need to be strengthened after this weekend’s fatalities, which are the first ever for the race.
“It’s not a professionally-geared type of competition, so it’s mostly amateur sailors out for a good time,” Roberts said. “They haven’t been real tough on them, maybe now they will I guess.”
Two of the dead were recovered by a civilian boat, while another was found by a Coast Guard helicopter.
