Forget Barbie and Lego, a new study finds your kids would be happier with a hamster.

Researchers in the United States have found that children of all ages, even babies, prefer living creatures to toys.

Scientists conducted three separate experiments in which children were given a choice between animals or attractive toys. They found that the kids spent more time with the creatures — even the ones that may frighten mom and dad, like spiders and snakes.

The kids playing with the animals also showed more curiosity and interest, such as talking, gesturing and asking more questions.

The study’s lead author says that based on her research animals may be a good instrument for learning.
