TORONTO, Ont. – The city will be spending $1 million to upgrade the Toronto Parking Authority meter machines because they don’t work with the Royal Canadian Mint’s new loonies and toonies.
The Toronto Star reported the coins are manufactured with multi-ply plated steel technology.
Upgrades will be done to 2,978 machines, at a cost of $355.40-per-machine upgrade.
The Toronto Parking Authority approved the measure at a board meeting on Wednesday, the paper said.
Also, the cost of upgrades will come out of the city’s operating budget.
