The family of a Canadian ski-cross racer killed during a World Cup race in March says the death was “entirely avoidable.”

29-year-old Nik Zoricic died after falling into safety netting as he approached the finish line at a race in Switzerland.

His death has been deemed a “freak accident.”

However, family lawyer Tim Danson say that characterization distorts the truth.

Danson said authorities were warned the course was unsafe.

“The finish line was a death trap,” he said. “It is unacceptable that an elite athlete like Nik Zoricic can make a perfect landing, barely miss the finish line by one metre, and be killed for it.”

The International Ski Federation is still probing what it called a terrible, tragic accident.

Ski-cross debuted as an Olympic sport at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver.

Zoricic had raced on the World Cup circuit for more than three years when he died.
