The Ontario Energy Board says prices will be rising on May 1.

The OEB says the increase will mean the average residential customer with a smart meter will pay about $4 more per month. The hike will be $5.80 for non-smart meter homes.

Energy Minister Chris Bentley says there are ways to keep a lid on your hydro bill.

“It is important to note that we are entering air conditioning season. The easiest way to make sure that you manage your bill, if you’re using air conditioning, is to make sure that it’s not running when you’re out of the house,” said Bentley.

“You can save just under $100 over the course of three months in the summer if you turn that air conditioner off or reduce the temperature when you’re not in the house.”

The agency says prices are climbing because coal generation is being replaced with things like natural gas and renewable generation.

The price change only applies to customers who buy electricity directly from their local unit.
