Toronto has its first confirmed case of human rabies in more than 80 years.

Testing is being done to determine where and how a 41-year-old man became infected.

The man was reportedly showing symptoms while working as a bartender in  the Dominican Republic.

Charles Rupprecht, chief of the rabies program at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control said a rabid bat could infect a cat, which in turn could infect a person.

Human cases of rabies are rare in Canada – the last case was reported in 1931.
