TORONTO, Ont. – If you were wandering around the Metro Convention Centre over the April 14 weekend and ran into Batman or Superman, don’t be alarmed, Wizard World Comic Con was in town.
One of the world’s largest comic book and popular arts festival, Comic Con featured a collection of products and celebrities celebrating popular culture.
Along with the rare merchandise and comic-book collectibles, the event featured a make-shift ring full of axes, swords, shields and a warrior waiting for you to step in and in do battle.
“We bring the commoners into the ring, we get them to have the taste of battle, feel what it is to be in the heat of it all,” said Hagar the Iron Fist, the referee of the matches.
The warrior himself, Edmond Loyd, was a compassionate fighter, despite his impressive physical attributes.
“I do pity them, they’re humans, they don’t deserve this kind of death,” Loyd said. “If they were undead I might be more happy to take them down.”
Perhaps most impressive was the detail present in many of the costumes.
“All the belt gizmos, the proton packs, made basically out of separate parts that we scratch build,” said one man dressed up with his friend as the Ghostbusters. “We’ve done stuff as far as parades, MS walks, food drives, we are working on doing hospital visits for kids.”
Comic Con Toronto 2012 ran from April 14-15 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
