TORONTO, Ont. – It appears these are frustrating times at City Hall for supporters of Mayor Rob Ford who are trying to contract out jobs and reduce the city’s payroll.

After council voted to renew the cleaners’ contract, Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday asked taxpayers to quote, “don’t send us any more activists, unionists or cyclists.”

Holyday is urging taxpayers to elect people with good common sense who want to manage the city’s affairs.

“Take a look at who you’re voting for, and make sure that they’re there for the right reasons,” Holyday said. “…They couldn’t look the taxpayer in the eye after blowing $12-14 million.”

In terms of what he meant in the “cyclists” reference, Holyday said he was just giving an example of “people who seem to get on council for whatever reasons and they all have a special interest.”

Holyday pointed out that contracting out cleaning services could save taxpayers $10 million over five years.
