Study reveals NHL teams with most bang for their buck

A new BMO study has unveiled which NHL teams had the best value for their payroll during the 2011-12 season, compared to the worst, and most Canadian teams did not make the top of the list.

In first place are the Nashville Predators, with 104 points and a payroll of only $51 million, which BMO’s deputy chief economist and lead study author Doug Porter said is roughly two points for every million dollar spent on players.

Other teams at the top include the Ottawa Senators, Phoenix Coyotes and the New York Rangers. The top five teams will all be in the playoffs.

At the other end of the spectrum stand the Columbus Blue Jackets, with a league bottom 65 points and a payroll of $61 million, averaging out to one point per million spent.

Only slightly better were the Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadiens, the Leafs and the Anaheim Ducks.
