Four decades as a police officer is enough for Peel’s chief of police.
Mike Metcalf announced, Wednesday, he will be retiring as the region’s top cop at the end of March.
Metcalf joined the Mississauga police department in 1971.
He told 680News when he started as a police officer, becoming chief was not on his radar.
He got the top job on January 1, 2006, becoming the fifth chief of police for the Peel Regional Police.
Metcalf told 680News transparency is key to running a police department although says he is also often been criticized for not being transparent enough.
“Sometimes I’m in a position where I can’t say anything, I think you can probably appreciate that, by statute, by regulation or even legal advice,” he explained.
Metcalf says he has no regrets.
“You have your ups and downs but I think that’s part of the chief job in Ontario really or anywhere across Canada.”
He says his future includes a set of golf clubs.
“I started playing golf when I was about 10 years old at Trafalgar Golf and Country Club out in Milton. While I was doing this job I had to quit (but) I’m going back. I’m going to play out the days in the summer.”
Metcalf says he hopes one of his deputies will replace him as police chief.
