Students faces charges after loaded handgun found in backpack

An Oshawa college student faces charges after a loaded handgun was discovered in a backpack at Durham College.

Durham Regional police report students found the loaded .45 calibre gun in an abandoned backpack in a classroom on the college’s main campus.

Originally security and tactical officers were unable to locate a suspect after searching the campus, but later they arrested a 25-year-old man near his Ajax home.

Police said the .45 calibre gun was reported as stolen in Toronto last year.

Dominic Chong faces several firearms charges, including possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition, and careless storage of a firearm.
