Anti-fur demonstration outside Holt Renfrew, Saturday

TORONTO, Ont. – Hundreds of animal rights advocates protested outside high-end retailer Holt Renfrew in Yorkville on Saturday afternoon.

The animal activists were demonstrating against Canada Goose Expedition Clothing Outfitters, who sell down jackets with fur hoods.

The protest was part of larger campaign staged by the Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals.

Organizers of the protest, “The Fur-Bearers Defenders” gathered a substantial group of sign-bearing activists that stood on the sidewalk outside the retailer spreading their message of “Firm Trim is a Trap.”

Canada Goose products use coyote fur and down products to provide warmth.

The Canada Goose website explained that the fur is used because it “never freezes, doesn’t hold water, and the uneven hair lengths create a windbreak that protects exposed skin, helping to reduce heat loss from the face.”

Canada Goose said it adheres to industry and government guidelines for the ethical treatment of animals.

“We strongly identify with the value systems of these communities, and make a commitment that carries over to the way we do business,” the Canada Goose website said. “Canada Goose does not buy fur from farms of any sort ever.”

Canada Goose has partnerships with the Conservation Alliance and Polar Bears International.

Demonstrations were also held outside Holt Renfrew stores in Burlington, Hamilton and St. Catharines.
