BURLINGTON, Ont. – A female driver died after her car was struck by a flying truck wheel on the Queen Elizabeth Way in Burlington, Thursday.
Ontario Provincial Police told 680News the 54-year-old woman from Hamilton was travelling along the Toronto-bound QEW near the Burlington Skyway at around 6:45 a.m. when a flying truck wheel from the Fort Erie-bound lanes bounced over the centre median and smashed into the Honda, causing it to go off the highway.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
“A black tire at that time of day, it’s completely dark out, the person would not have seen it coming at all. No way to combat that; no defensive driving could get you out of that,” OPP Const. Graham Williamson said.
Police said the truck that lost the tire continued on along the QEW towards the Niagara area.
Police found the driver and the truck Friday and no charges have been laid.
