2009 Toyota Venza top stolen vehicle this year: Insurance Bureau

TORONTO, Ont. – The hottest car among thieves this year is the 2009 Toyota Venza.

It topped the Insurance Bureau of Canada’s list of the most stolen vehicles, followed by the 1999 and 2000 Honda Civics.

Rick Dubin of the Insurance Bureau told 680News thieves are skilled these days, but still rely on vehicles’ owners to help them snatch cars.

“A lot of vehicles were stolen because they were left running unattended […] you see it all the time. Twenty per cent of all thefts are done that way,” Dubin said.

Rounding out the top five most stolen vehicles are the 2006 Ford F350 pick-up and the 2002 Cadillac Escalade.

He also said the popular most of the stolen cars on the list are resold locally, so drivers need to be careful while shopping for a used car.

“If you are considering buying a used vehicle, buy from a reputable dealer. If you’re buying private, order a vehicle history report like a CarFax or CarProof just to see the history behind it,” Dubin said.
