Lupul scores winner in shootout to put Leafs back on top of division

TORONTO, Ont. – The Toronto Maple Leafs displayed some of the same grit that has helped them start the season with so much success Friday night, as the squad managed a shootout victory over the Dallas Stars.

Joffrey Lupul used a nifty shot to score in the third round of the shootout, setting up goalie Jonas Gustavsson who made an impressive save on Mike Ribeiro to ensure the win.

Lupul was the only player to score in the shootout, which featured strong goaltending from both teams.

The win placed the Leafs in sole possession of first place in the Northeast Division, with the Boston Bruins trailing by a single point.

The win didn’t come without loss however, as both Dave Steckel and Carl Gunnarsson left the game with injuries.

Gustavsson was impressive in net, stopping 26/29 shots and coming up big in the shootout to continue his recent streak of strong play.

The Maple Leafs’ next game is Sunday in Anaheim.
