Councillor trying to usurp mayor’s power to lock out city workers

TORONTO, Ont. – At least one city councillor thinks Mayor Rob Ford should be stripped of the power to lock out city workers if collective bargaining goes off the rails.

Many municipal worker contracts expire the end of 2011.

Councillor John Filion is reportedly worried the city may try to lock out workers, and so proposed that council have a say in any lockout, rather than just the labour relations committee, which that is controlled by the mayor.

But, deputy mayor Doug Holyday told 680News this thinking is just premature and reckless.

“I think it’s going to cause a lot of needless concern to many of our workers,” Holyday said.

He added there’s no plan at this time by the Ford administration to lock out city workers.
