City ombudsman issues report, criticizes how city handles third-party liability claims

Toronto’s ombudsman has just issued a report criticizing how the city handles third-party liability claims for damage under $10,000.

Examples of these types of claims are car damage due to potholes, or a flooded home due to a backed-up sewer.

Ombudsman Fiona Crean’s investigation over the past five years found that more than 90 per cent of these claims are denied, often without any investigation.

Her report calls for the adoption of new system to ensure all claims are properly reviewed. She also calls for the the city to stop providing misleading and incomplete information to the public.
