OTTAWA – There could soon be tougher regulations for the Canadian flag.
A new bill is before the House of Commons that would punish anyone who tried to force another person to stop flying the flag.
The bill is aimed at condo boards and private companies who have told tenants they cannot display our national symbol.
“All Canadians, no matter where they live, should be able to enjoy the privilege of expressing their love for our country, by flying the Canadian flag.” said MP John Carmichael.
Carmichael said anyone who prevents the flying of the flag should first get a warning and if the issue continues they should face a fine or up to 2 years in jail.
Heritage Minister James Moore said he is backing the bill.
“Let there be no doubt that the Canadian flag is something that all Canadians should be able to fly with pride,” said Moore.
The Liberals support the move but interim leader Bob Rae said this is just a diversion and the government should focus on real problems.
“We’ve got 1.4-millions Canadians who are unemployed. We have young people who have never had a job,” said Rae.
He added that the Conservatives should be focusing on other issues like protecting Canada from the European debt crisis.
The NDP are questioning why the Tories are using a national symbol for political gain.
