Possible Air Canada flight attendant strike September 21

TORONTO, Ont. – Air Canada flight attendants have voted almost 98 per cent in favour of walking out as early as September 21.

The vote on a strike mandate was held between September 4 and September 13.

Jeff Taylor, president of the Air Canada Component of CUPE told 680News the vote does not mean there will be a strike.

“I’m hoping that the company will come back to the table, listen to what the concerns of their employees are and bargain with us to get a deal here,” said Taylor.

Should further negotiations be unable to come to a deal both sides can agree upon, Air Canada flight attendants could be on strike at the earliest on Sept. 21, at 00:01 a.m.

Taylor said the sticking point in negotiations is concern for the health and safety of the 6,800 flight attendants, who are working 13-hour days.

He said a strike would cause delays and he suggests people with travel plans wrap them up before next Wednesday “just in case.”

However, Air Canada insists that it is business as usual and that customers can continue to book flights with the airline with confidence.

Air Canada adds that in the event an agreement is not met by the strike deadline, the airline will implement a partial schedule and will use partner airlines to accommodate passengers.

Earlier this year Air Canada ground personnel went on strike for three days.
